Key West is Open for Winter Tropical Fun
The Conch Republic is Back Better than Ever!
Anyone would agree that 2020 has been a heck of year, and for a tiny island that was just recovering from a major 2017 hurricane strike, COVID 19 has been a real nightmare. We are used to storms down here and were getting our tropical groove back when COVID-19 popped up and on March 27 the entire Keys chain shut down to visitor traffic by road.
It goes without saying that we love our visitors here in Key West. More than 5 million people visit each year and about 44% percent of all jobs here are related to the tourist industry. It’s a 2.4 billion-dollar business for the Florida Keys as a whole.
Luckily, we are a resilient bunch and people love the Keys. Even with travel restrictions, May through June saw a gradual return of visitor activity. When the island chain reopened to traffic on June 1, many Florida mainland locals took advantage of the uncrowded conditions and came down to enjoy some island time.
We have been very fortunate here in Key West to get through with only a very few COVID-19 hospitalizations and fatalities. On the other hand, bar closures and midnight last call in Key West? That has been a real shock. Things got back a lot closer to normal with bars reopening on September 14, but it is going to take some serious partying this winter to recover from the trauma of a (sort of) dry Key West.
Cruise into Good Times with Arcimoto Key West
Now the winter cold is closing in up north and it is the perfect time to escape to paradise and shake off the stress and blues of a crazy spring and summer. Bars and restaurants are open with social distancing rules in effect. Key West outdoor attractions are up and running, with beaches, boat ramps, parks, splashpads, and recreational areas open. Most watersport equipment rental concessions are back in operation.
Like everywhere right now, Key West has a few restrictions in place even outdoors. Masks are required around town but the governor has suspended the collection of fines for being unmasked. Social distancing must be adhered to on the beach, masks are required, and some public restrooms are closed. Park playground equipment is sanitized daily. Large fishing charter boats are at reduced capacity to allow for social distancing on deck.
All in all, not too much different here in Key West than what most people are experiencing in their hometowns. But the big difference down here is blue skies, warm breezes, sparkling water, sun, sand, and palm trees. Just what the doctor ordered – fresh air and a dose of vitamin D to boost the immune system. And maybe the silver lining of the pandemic is that it puts more focus on enjoying fun outdoor activities. Touring the island is an ideal way to stay outside and social distanced while having a great time.
