Arcimoto Key West and the FUV: Delivering User-Friendly Fun
Any Key West visitor will have seen the island’s ubiquitous scooters, and there are plenty of motorcycle riders in the Keys as well. Why not? Perfect weather, great scenery, warm air – America’s Caribbean Paradise is simply a great place for two-wheel adventures. However, a scooter is often not the right choice for a Key West visitor looking for safe, fun, and exciting transport around the island.
Locals make it look easy, but they ride the roads day in and day out, moving instinctively with the rhythm of the Key West streets and rather intense, if slow, traffic. And locals are generally not distracted by the sights and sounds, wanting to look around and take in all that is interesting on the island. They are focused on going places and doing things. Most of the time. In contrast, visitors want to be and should be enjoying their day, relaxing and sightseeing, not maintaining the hyper-vigilance that every experienced street motorcycle rider knows is a matter of survival.
The Arcimoto FUV from Arcimoto Key West is the perfect cross-over vehicle for taking in the best of Key West. The FUV sits upright and stable – the reverse-trike design means there is no need to maintain balance. Driver and passenger are seated comfortably, with firm back support and double safety belts that criss-cross the chest. While caution is of course required when operating any vehicle, it is perfectly fine to look around a bit and chat as the FUV runs silently along the street. Take a drink of your coffee from the cup holder. At a stop sign, check your phone held securely in the built-in phone holder and maybe choose a different play list for the FUV’s Bluetooth sound system. All while enjoying the fresh air, wide-open views, and zippy acceleration of a scooter or motorcycle.
Is driving the FUV like riding a motorcyle?
The FUV is a motorcycle-class vehicle but it feels very different to drive than a motorcycle. The FUV is stable and balanced – the driver does not need to counter-steer by leaning over as on a motorcycle. Braking is far more effective because more tire area is in contact with the pavement. Driving a motorcycle or scooter safely takes skill and experience. Anyone can operate an FUV immediately and as easily as a golf cart. The controls are very simple and intuitive – a twist throttle, a hand brake lever, and a floor brake pedal just like in a car. But the FUV is highly responsive to the throttle, like a motorcycle, and a common reaction from drivers and passengers alike is that the instant torque is really fun and thrilling. The FUV is powerful, but the ride is extremely quiet, with silent electric motors and a streamlined design that cuts wind noise. It is easy for driver and passenger to carry on a conversation.
Parking is a Breeze
While Key West parking regulations do not allow an FUV to occupy a motorcycle parking spot, the Arcimoto is easy to squeeze into tight spaces where a car will not fit. A reverse gear and 40 degree turning radius make an FUV far easier to park than a car, and wide-open visibility greatly reduces the difficulty of backing or paralleling into a space. The visibility and high seating position also make pulling out into traffic a much safer process and in fact help to reduce the chance of accidents overall.
Ride With Confidence
Arcimoto Key West is the first official Arcimoto rental franchise in America, and we brought the FUV to Key West because we believe it is a great vehicle for the island from all perspectives. It is easy and fun to drive, even for visitors who are not familiar with Key West traffic and roads. The FUV is safe, because it meets all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for a motorcycle, but is actually far safer than any two-wheeled vehicle. And the FUV is emission-free and represents a sustainable transportation model for the future. You can ride with confidence and have fun while doing the right thing for the planet.
